WHAT IS LOCAL COMMUNITY PLANNING?

Local Community Planning operates on the same principles as Community Planning overall:-

  • that people and communities are genuinely engaged in the decisions made on public services which affect them
  • that there is a commitment from organisations to work together to continually improve the way services are delivered for local communities

It brings this way of working to issues and services that affect people at a local level. Local Community Planning in East Lothian will correspond with the 5 multi -member wards in the east of the county and a combined area covering the 2 Musselburgh wards.

A broad based Local Area Forum (LAF) will be established in each area bringing together local community groups, businesses, voluntary sector organisations, public services and individuals. This forward looking planning group will look at key issues facing their locality. The first task of each LAF will be to produce a Local Community Plan to guide their ongoing work.

Creating a Local Community Plan is about developing a shared vision for the future of the ward areas and identifying what needs to be done locally to realise this vision.

LOCAL COMMUNITY PLANNING IN THE NORTH BERWICK COASTAL AREA

North BerwickThe North Berwick Coastal Ward lies in the East of the county, stretching along the Forth coast from Gosford Bay to Scoughall. Centred on the town of North Berwick, a fishing and trading port dating back to 1373, the ward also includes the villages of Direlton, Gullane, Drem, Aberlady, Fenton Barns and a number of other small settlements.

An estimated 12293* people live in the ward, approximately 13% of the population of East Lothian.  Approximately 5909 (or 48%) of these people live in the town of North Berwick.

More information about the ward and its population can be found in the  North Berwick Coastal Community Profile,  a statistical profile of the area covering themes including population, health, housing, crime and safety, education and community satisfaction with local services.

TAKE PART

Over July - September 2011 a survey looking at local community priorities for action was run as part of Local Community Planning initiatives across the ward. The survey was promoted through the local media, available at North Berwick Community Centre and Local Community Planning events, and distributed directly to a range of local groups and organisations  across the ward.

198 people across the ward completed the survey and a report has been prepared outlining the findings.

The survey was designed to complement community consultation events that have taken place in North Berwick, Gullane, Aberlady and Dirleton since June 2011. The results from this survey will also be considered, alongside data collected from the East Lothian Household Survey, Transition North Berwick's NB Living survey and the Lime Survey conducted with young people at North Berwick High School. Together this information will inform the direction of Local Community Planning across the ward and be used to generate key themes and priorities for the development of a Local Community Plan.

THE NORTH BERWICK COASTAL WARD LOCAL COMMUNITY PLAN

One of the first tasks for the Local Community Planning in the ward is to work with the community to develop a Local Community Plan.

Creating a Local Community Plan is about developing a shared vision for the future of the ward areas and identifying what needs to be done locally to realise this vision. The Plan will help guide Local Community Planning activities by:-

  • focusing attention on agreed priorities and outcomes
  • bringing existing groups together and forming new networks to take work forward
  • influencing the delivery of public services locally and informing policy developments and planning
  • providing a structure through which progress and achievements can be measured, recorded and reported

The process of creating a Local Community Plan will begin at the first Local Area Forum on 4th June.
